We sat down with Katherine DuBois, Executive Artistic Director, to ask what connection really means at ArtStream — and why it matters now more than ever.
Q: Katherine, when you say ArtStream connects communities, what does that really mean to you?
“When performers and audience come together, something magical happens — everyone is transported to the world of the play. This togetherness, experiencing something special together, is powerful. Artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities should be in community with the public.”
Q: How do families and caregivers experience connection through ArtStream?
“Many families and caregivers come to us seeking meaningful engagement, growth, and belonging for someone they love. What they often discover is belonging for themselves. In rehearsal rooms and theatre lobbies, conversations turn into friendships. Shared experiences turn into solidarity. Some of our family members and caregivers join the cast or help with costumes or props. Being a part of an artistic community can be a lot of fun!”
Q: What makes ArtStream meaningful for teaching artists and mentors?
“It’s rare that professional artists and creative teachers get support and creative freedom. Our performers are intuitive, imaginative, and sincere — wonderful qualities for an ensemble and for the devised theatre process.”
Q: What does connection look like for the ArtStreamers themselves?
“For our ArtStreamers, connection often begins with belonging. Many of the adults we serve have limited spaces where their creativity is prioritized and their talents are showcased. On our stage, they are leaders. They form lasting friendships, grow in confidence, and discover a sense of purpose that extends far beyond the theatre.”
Q: Why is this work so important right now?
“Adults with intellectual disabilities are too often isolated from mainstream creative spaces. ArtStream lifts the curtain. When we create together, we model a community rooted in dignity, equity, and joy. That ripple effect reaches families, caregivers, and artists — and ultimately inspires the broader community.”
